The corporate governance community is international. Many U.S. directors now serve on boards that are headquartered in other countries. Learn to navigate the international corporate governance community and identify director opportunities in other nations. Dr. Sung Sohn, former Senior Economist on the President's Council of Economic Advisors in The White House, will facilitate a fireside chat with Mr. Paul Chan, board member of the Global Network of Directors Institutes (GNDI) and President of the Malaysian Alliance of Corporate Directors. GNDI is a network of 21 director institutions from around the world, including the major director associations of Australia, Brazil, Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mauritius, New Zealand, Pakistan, The Philippines, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Switzerland, Thailand, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States (i.e., NACD), Gulf States (Middle East), Israel, Europe and Argentina.

Paul Chan

Paul’s professional, business and corporate experiences span decades in leadership capacities in Public Accounting, Auditing, Financial, Business and Corporate Advisory Services in a variety of industries. He has served over a dozen Boards and Committees ranging from Publicly Traded to Privately-Owned Companies, Regulatory Committees and not-for-profit Professional entities; he is an all-round corporate professional. The industries Paul currently serves in at Board Governance include IT Software Services and Education, Industrial Chemical, and Asset Management; formerly, he had served on boards of Life Insurance and Financial Services, Multi-Port Facilities Operator, Cold-roll Steel Processing and an Industrial Group. The not-for-profit entities he has taken leadership of include that of public accountants, corporate secretaries, corporate governance, corporate directors, and financial and wealth management professionals. Paul is the President and Co-Founder of MACD (Malaysian Alliance of Corporate Directors), a not-for-profit, independent, membership entity, Vice President I of FPLC (Federation of Public Listed Companies) and Executive Committee Member of GNDI (Global Network of Director Institutes.) He is an IIRC Ambassador of the International Integrated Reporting Council, UK, and also serves on the Advisory Board of FutureBoards SA, Oslo, Norway. He has delivered numerous presentations in forums, seminars, workshops and conferences, both locally and internationally, on issues relating to Board Governance, Corporate Directorship, Business Continuity and Succession Planning, and Financial Planning. He has contributed a Foreword to the book, “The New Breed of Independent Corporate Directors – Personal Glimpses and Perspectives of the Tone-at-the-Bottom" - the article was also published in the NACD Directorship January/February 2014 issue. Paul is the President of Business Transitions Asia Sdn Bhd, a business strategic advisory firm. A Chartered Accountant, a Fellow Member of, respectively, the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA, UK), the Institute of Chartered Secretaries & Administrators (FCIS, UK) and CPA Australia (FCPA), he is also an NACD Governance Fellow and NACD Board Leadership Fellow of the National Association of Corporate Directors, USA, and a Life-Member of Ascend Pinnacle Pan-Asian Corporate Directors, USA.

Dr. Sung Won Sohn

Dr. Sohn is an internationally known economist. Dr. Sohn was the President and Chief Executive Officer of Hanmi Financial Corporation, a commercial bank in Los Angeles, California. Before joining Hanmi in 2005, Dr. Sohn was an Executive Vice President and Chief Economic Officer at Wells Fargo Banks. Dr. Sohn also serves as Commissioner for LACERS (Los Angeles City Employee Retirement System) and Chair of the Investment Committee, managing $18 billion in assets. He serves on the Board of Directors for Western Alliance Bancorporation, and National Association of Corporate Directors of Southern California. Dr. Sohn is an economics professor at California State University CI and director of the Institute for Global Economic Research forecasting economic and investment conditions in the Pacific-rim countries. Prior to Wells Fargo, Dr. Sohn was a Senior Economist on the President's Council of Economic Advisors in The White House. He was responsible for economic and legislative matters pertaining to The Federal Reserve and financial markets. Dr. Sohn has also been a tenured professor in Pennsylvania State University System. In 2001, Bloomberg News selected Dr. Sohn as one of the five most accurate forecasters in the United States. In 2002, Blue Chip Publications picked him as the most accurate forecaster for the Western States, and he was named to Time Magazine's Board of Economists. In 2006, The Wall Street Journal featured a story naming Dr. Sohn as the most accurate economist in the United States. This is the most prestigious honor in the economics profession. Dr. Sohn was chosen as one of the 100 most influential Minnesotans of the 20th century by the state’s largest daily newspaper, The Star Tribune. Others on the list included Charles Lindberg, Sinclair Lewis, Hubert Humphrey, Walter Mondale and Charles Schultz. Dr. Sohn was a Commissioner of the Port of Los Angeles, our nation’s largest seaport. He has served on the boards of First California Bancorporation, Ministers Mutual Life Insurance Company, LA Music Center (Performing Arts), Children’s Bureau of Los Angeles, Foreign Affairs Council of LA, Park Nicollet Health Services, The Blake School, Minnesota Community College System, North Memorial Medical Center, Harvard Business School Association of Minnesota, Crystal Evangelical Free Church, Children's Theater Company, and the American Heart Association of Minnesota. He is the author of two books: Global Financial Crisis and Exit Strategy (2009) and The New Economy (2014). Dr. Sohn was educated at the University of Pittsburgh and Harvard Business School.
